The Davy

A The Davy is a new exhibition at the Cisternerne, in Copenhagen Denmark.

Significant Inventions are often the culmination of multiple discoveries from different people not just one individual. History can be biased in the retelling of these narratives.

The Davy is named after Humphrey Davy the inventor who actually invented the first lightbulb

Upon studying the varying systems and branding for Band-Aid I learned that they do not have branding or systems for children’s Band-Aids.

They partner with other trade-marked companies to use their mascot imagery (i.e Disney characters). I saw the opportunity to design whimsical Band-Aid specific mascots that appeal to the imaginative at heart.

The Challenge

To inform an audience of a topic of our choosing, the challenge was to consider how all visual elements such as flooring, lighting, material and branding would contribute to the story and experience of the exhibit. The Davy tells the untold true story of the invention of the light bulb and how many inventors lost credit to Edison. This Project was in collaboration with my classmate Des.

The Identity

Named after the man who started it all The Davy has a clean minimal look and feel in order give a modern twist to old historical events. The logo is kept typographic to allow the museum space and the history to come to light.

Staying consistent with Helvetica Neue Bold The V and the Y were modified in order to accommodate the bright kerning of the capital V and Y at the end.

The Book

All of the information related to the exhibit was but into a presentation booklet for the client. All design information is presented from research to conception, with scale people in all elevation drawings to give context to the design size. Additionally, branding collateral, color, and materials are included.

The Space

This exhibit is designed with exploration and interaction in mind. The main framework of exploration is a timeline hall that tells the story of the Davy with an interactive light room that is inspired by the spectrum of color that is historically tied to the inventions on display.

In the exhibit space there are many places to sit, panels to read, and elements to interact with. All of the interactions are intended to guide the viewer through the true story of the invention of the lightbulb.

Collateral

The gradient elements used through the book and collateral are based on the timeline piece within the exhibit. Humphrey Davy who was the first to invent the lightbulb started with an oil lamp (red color) as the light bulb invention progressed the color of the light progressed to a cooler toned blue (LEDs).
